Prime Minister Narendra Modi has commended the recently released film The Sabarmati Report for its portrayal of the events surrounding the 2002 Godhra train burning incident and its aftermath. The movie, starring Vikrant Massey and inspired by true events, delves into the contentious circumstances that led to the communal riots in Gujarat.
"It is good that this truth is coming out, and that too in a way common people can see it. A fake narrative can persist only for a limited period of time. Eventually, the facts will always come out!" Modi wrote on social media platform X in response to a review of the film.
Directed by Dheeraj Sarna and produced by Shobha Kapoor, Ektaa R Kapoor, Amul V Mohan, and Anshul Mohan, The Sabarmati Report opened to box office earnings of ₹1.41 crore on its first day. Analysts have expressed optimism about its weekend performance, predicting a strong showing.
The film had faced multiple delays, originally slated for release in May before being postponed to August and finally premiering on November 15. It follows the journey of a vernacular journalist, portrayed by Massey, as he investigates the truth behind the Godhra train tragedy, which resulted in the death of 59 passengers when the S-6 coach of the Sabarmati Express was set ablaze.
The tragedy had a profound impact, sparking widespread communal violence in Gujarat that led to the loss of over 1,000 lives, most of them Muslims.
Ektaa Kapoor, one of the producers, described the movie as a “social commentary,” addressing concerns that it might escalate communal tensions. “I have been receiving threats. Without drawing attention to it, it is something which I am dealing with and we, as a team, collectively are dealing with,” Kapoor shared during the film’s trailer launch.
While the film has sparked conversations, audience reactions have been mixed. Critics and viewers alike have noted its bold approach in revisiting one of India’s most polarizing events.
